PRESS RELEASE - June 2024

Just weeks after being named among the top strategic consulting firms in the UK, Cognosis has added a prestigious award from The Consultancy Growth Network (TCGN). At the inaugural ceremony of the Consultancy Awards on Thursday 13th June 2024 in London, Cognosis was awarded Silver in the Strategic Impact category, which celebrates the positive impact consultancies have on their clients’ transformation, their clients’ customers, society and the environment.

The awards were launched by TCGN to recognise the incredible work and impact of consultancies across the globe. Cognosis was commended for defining a new strategic path for a major UK energy services provider that ultimately led to an advantageous acquisition.

“Helping businesses and brands to build strategies that ignite and sustain growth remains the cornerstone of our work at Cognosis,” said managing partner John Hosking.

“Being recognised by an independent panel of nine judges, each with decades of experience owning and growing consultancies, is therefore especially satisfying. This award reflects the expertise and dedication of all our consultants at Cognosis.”

From steady growth to transformative value creation

The accolade rewarded our work with Sureserve, a specialist in energy efficiency. Cognosis was brought on board by the new CEO to answer a simple question: “How do we shift gear from steady growth to transformative value creation?” At the time, their business consisted of nine subsidiaries across different industries that lacked a coherent purpose and direction.

We helped the Sureserve team to define a new five-year strategy under the banner “Lead energy transition in UK Social Housing” that would significantly increase the firm’s market cap and ultimately led to its acquisition last year at a significant premium to share price.

“Our approach centred on our Growth Transformation Framework, a proprietary, tried-and-tested methodology that provides clients with the tools to challenge their thinking, a clear roadmap and process to build confidence, and also a strategy rooted in the reality of business capability, culture and financial constraint,” recalled Duncan Campbell, Partner

“In particular, the framework allowed Sureserve to drive home tough decisions on where to focus. The strategy boldly set out for Sureserve to become the leader in energy transition for the social housing sector. This choice meant divesting several profitable growing businesses. Although the rationale was clear, it still required tenacity and courage to make the final call.”

Sureserve CEO Peter Smith reflected: “We found in Cognosis a partner that not only understood the intricacies of our industry but also one that matched our ambition for growth.”
